Art & Community

Art & Community

My artistry has always been tied to community. Making art with people, and creating spaces for people to come together in artistic endeavour, has shaped how I approach my own artistic practice. Facilitating, teaching, and mentoring are all extensions of my individual practice, and often allow me to bring storytelling, movement, poetry, and visual art into spaces that do not traditionally house them.

Sara-Maya Kaba creating art for The Fourth Space

I am the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Fourth Space, an arts-based nonprofit creating spaces of belonging, creativity, and well-being for youth and adults, with a particular focus on immigrant communities. Our work is built around three pillars:

  1. Art for Change · mentoring young immigrant and newcomer artists to bring their stories to the stage, and running workshops and productions that uplift cultural art forms and confront injustice.
  2. Play · creating judgement-free creative spaces where adults and youth can simply make, experiment, and play.
  3. Mental Health Literacy through the Arts · using art-making to open up conversation around mental health, especially in communities where it’s rarely named.

Arts in Pakistan

Parindey · Global Encounters
Community workshop participants in Pakistan holding their artwork

I've led storytelling and arts workshops across Pakistan, running arts camps in remote mountain communities through to teacher education and professional development, using drawing, poetry, and movement to open up conversations about identity, emotion, and belonging.

As an arts facilitator with Parindey and a poetry facilitator for the Global Encounters Youth Leadership Program, I worked with children and young people who don't always have access to creative space, building it with them on the ground.
